The first photo is in landscape mode, which made the subject basically blend together with the background. The second photo was in portrait mode, which made the girl stand out against the background. Landscape mode would be better for scenery type pictures, when you want to get everything in focus at once. Portrait mode would be better for a photo with just one subject that needs to be in focus.
